![]() COLLEGE WELCOMES STUDENTS BACK FOR FALL 2009!
![]() Welcome back Students!!! The College of Agricultural Sciences is proud to welcome over 880 undergraduate students for Fall 2009. Over the past three years, undergraduate enrollment climbed 7.1% in 2007; 6.9% in 2008; and 7.0% for 2009! Our College is rapidly expanding as students learn about the good things we have to offer! We have several exciting activities and events planned for our students! The first week of school, we moved nearly 100 students into Steagall Hall, a living-learning community dedicated to students enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences. On September 2, we welcomed students to the annual "Student Cookout" to kick-off the new school year. We are proceeding with plans for a new addition onto the Ag Building to accomodate our growing programs and faculty. We look forward to another great year with outstanding students! Come and be a part of a winning team in the College of Agricultural Sciences! 2009 AG INDUSTRY DAY WAS HUGE SUCCESS Once again, visitors of all ages participated in the 5th Annual Agriculture Industry Day on April 17, 2009. Dr. Gary L. Minish, Dean of the College, welcomed over 1,000 people to the event at University Farms. Morning activities included a Livestock Judging competition which drew over 700 students from counties throughout Southern Illinois. The morning session also included exhibits, refreshents, and guest speakers. A complimentary beef and pork BBQ luncheon followed at noon. And the afternoon featured clinics delivered by award-winning faculty and staff on such topics as: horsemanship, spring landscape and lawn care, lumberjacking, nutrition, and viticulture. Plans are already in the works for the 6th Annual Agriculture Industry Day in 2010! We look forward to seeing everyone next year! The College Leadership Board has approximately 100 members that represent all facets of the agriculture, food and forestry industries. They meet two times each year to assist the College by providing guidance and support to enhance the educational, research and outreach missions. At the last College Leadership Board Meeting on April 17, 2008, the College of Agricultural Sciences honoroed three industry leaders for their contributions. Mr. W. Lyle Roberts, Jr, Chief Executive Office for the Illinois Soybean Association, received the College's annual "Service to Agriculture Award." Mr. Tim Southey, Vice President of Landscape Operations at Green View Companies, was awarded the "Outstanding Alumni Award." And Mr. David Hartke, Chair of the Illinois Soybean Association, was awarded the "2008 Young Alumnus Award." DOCTORAL PROGRAM APPROVED ![]() There is a long-awaited change taking place within the College of Agricultural Sciences. On December 4, 2007 the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved a Ph.D. Degree Program for the College. The College is moving forward with final planning for the program. Dr. Gary Minish, Dean, anticipates the College will strive to enroll the first students into the newly developed program in Fall 2008. GIL AND JEAN KROENING LECTURE SERIES SPONSORS CATHERINE BERTINI VISIT
The College of Agricultural Sciences was one of the proud sponsors of a public lecture by Ms. Catherine Bertini, former head of the United Nations World Food Programme, on October 15, 2007. In 2003, Bertini was slected as the World Food Prize Laureate for her leadership in ending famine and reducing hunger throughout the world. The lecture was presented as part of the Gil and Jean Kroening Lecture Series. Dr. Gil Kroening, former dean of the SIUC College of Agriculture Sciences, and his wife Jean Kroening, established the fellowship to address issues such as world agriculture, food and environmental issues. Other sponsors were the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, the Illinois Soybean Association, and the United Nations Association-Southern Illinois Chapter. · "Former UN World Food Program Chief to Visit SIUC" [SIUC Press Release, 10/10/2007]
DELANEY FAMILY CREATES SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
The late George Delaney, who died in 1985, taught high school agriculture in Eldorado and Harrisburg for 15 years. He also mentored students through the FFA organization, served on the school board and city council, and was a deacon of his church. G. David Delaney, at 1983 SIUC graduate, established a $100,000 endowment in his father's honor to benefit students in the College of Agricultural Sciences. "My father was a great motivator. He had an easygoing manner, but his actions displayed wisdom and intregrity," stated Delaney. Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year. The awards will be presented to students who have a declared major in the College of Agricultural Sciences. This year's scholarship recipients are Jacqueline Crosser [Anna, IL], Daniel Etienne [Eldorado, IL], Scarlett Horton [Eldorado, IL], and David Yandell [Tunnel Hill, IL].· "Delaney Family Creates Endowment to Honor Father" [SIUC Press Release, 09/12/2007]

AG ALUMNUS & WORLD FOOD PRIZE RECIPIENT, EDSON LOBATO, RETURNS TO SIUC ![]() 2006 World Food Prize recipient and Ag Alumnus, Mr. Edson Lobato, recently returned to his almameter to speak about his award and the growth of Brazilian agriculture. The World Food Prize honors work that improves the world's food supply. Lobato shares the award with H.E. Alysson Paolinelli, former Agriculture Minister for Brazil; and A. Colin McClung, IRI Research Institute. Lobato is being honored for his work in converting the Brazilian grasslands into fertile cropland. The results have tripled production, and expanded crop offerings. It is estimated that hundreds of millions of people will benefit from his work.
